How We Create

How We Create

For All Who Identify as Women, with Love

At Fento, creation isn’t reaction. It’s an offering.

We don’t chase trends. We listen to bodies, to our Mother Earth, to the quiet wisdom that comes with time.

We design for those who move through the world with the depth and complexity that womanhood brings, whether they were born into it, grew into it, or carry it quietly inside them. We consider softness, structure, comfort, and courage. We ask: How will this feel when you sit? When you stretch? When you dance? When you speak your mind? When the world asks too much of you?

Each piece is born from questions like these.

We work slowly. With fabrics that breathe. With shapes that honour natural bodies. We partner with ethical, women-led (when possible) manufactures  (currently in Vancouver) and we’re actively seeking collaborations with women-owned manufacturers in Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and India, so we can expand access to our pieces without compromising our values.

For us, sustainability is more than a sustainable fabric.  It’s a way of living our life. It means creating less, but better. It means respecting the hands that make each garment, and the body that will wear it. It means taking up space in this  turbulent world with beauty, thoughtfulness, and fierce tenderness.

Fabrics We Use

What we choose to make clothing from matters deeply. Not just for how it feels against your skin, but for how it touches the Earth, the people who grow and weave it, and the future we all share.

Every fiber is selected with care  for how it’s grown, processed, and returned to the Earth when its life is done.

We only use natural, biodegradable, and truly sustainable fibers,  partnering with suppliers who align with our values. Every material we use, whether grown in European fields, spun in Indian cooperatives, or woven in local mills—is chosen with care and purpose.

We prioritize fabrics that are:

  • Grown without chemicals or excessive water, and enriches the soil where it grows.
  • Fully compostable, or endlessly recyclable.
  • Kind to Mother Earth, soft to your skin, breathable, and made to last.

Cotton: Always Organic, Recycled, or Regeneratively Grown. Why? Because Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops on the planet. We only work with:

•Organic cotton (GOTS-certified when possible), grown without toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

•Recycled cotton, giving new life to post-consumer textiles or pre-consumer waste.

•Regeneratively grown cotton, which helps rebuild soil health, support biodiversity, and capture carbon, healing the land instead of depleting it.

Linen

Made from the flax plant, linen requires little water, no irrigation, and grows well in poor soil without chemical inputs. It’s strong, breathable, and fully biodegradable. We love its irregular texture, natural drape, and ability to soften over time, making it a perfect match for timeless garments that grow more beautiful with age. We love linen blends (with organic cotton, with hemp).

Hemp

Hemp is one of the oldest and most sustainable textiles known. It grows fast, needs no pesticides, and restores nutrients to the soil. Hemp fabrics are breathable, antimicrobial, and naturally UV-resistant. We choose mechanically processed hemp (not chemically processed) whenever possible for a lower environmental impact and better feel against the skin. For now, we prefer it blended with organic cotton or linen for softness on the skin.

Merino Wool:

One of the most sustainable and ethical fibers nature gives us. The sheep grow a new fleece every year, making it fully renewable, and the fiber itself is biodegradable, returning safely to the earth at the end of its lifetime .

Merino is soft on the skin, naturally breathable, and temperature-regulating. It resists odors, requires less washing, and lasts for years.

Ramie

Often overlooked, ramie is a bast fiber similar to linen, made from the stalks of the Chinese nettle plant. It requires minimal water and grows without chemicals. Ramie adds a silky sheen and resilience to blends, especially when combined with organic cotton or hemp, offering structure without sacrificing softness. We are still trying to find a certified source. Because even if is a natural fiber, the process from plant to yarn can be very polluting, like bamboo.

What We Don’t Use

•No polyester or synthetics, not even recycled plastic blends. Unless for specific gear like rain jackets, but we will always choose the recycled option.

•No rayon, modal, or bamboo viscose, unless they are closed-loop or non-toxic processed, and only is rare occasions for a very specific blend.

•No bamboo:  is often marketed as “eco-friendly” because the plant grows fast without much water or pesticides. But turning bamboo into soft fabric usually requires heavy chemical processing that harms workers and the environment. Unless it’s mechanically processed (which is rare and produces a coarse fabric), bamboo textiles aren’t as natural or sustainable as they seem.

•No blends that can’t biodegrade or be safely reused.

Our commitment to sustainability isn’t only about fabrics. It’s about circularity, traceability, and respect for people, plants, and the ecosystems we’re part of. We make fewer, better garments. We use natural buttons made from corozo (a sustainable material made from the fallen seeds of the tagua palm. Harvested without harming trees, it’s fully biodegradable and supports both rainforest conservation and local communities), we minimize our design without sacrificing style for minimal trims, and non toxic or low impact dyes.

We’re always learning. Sustainability isn’t a finish line, it’s more like a process of listening, evolving, rectifying, learning, and staying curious. As new fibers, techniques, and more Earth-friendly innovations emerge, we’ll keep sharing what we discover, because educating in sustainability is also part of our mission in Fento.
